Trading Psychology Workshop

Saturday 20th June 2009

London - 10am - 2pm

So You Want to Trade Better? Eliminate Fear

There are 4 primary trading fears, which have to be dealt with before you can reasonably expect to make a living from the markets. In this workshop Tom Hougaard and Dr David Paul will show you how to go about building the mental strength to go about playing the game of trading.

The Psychological Component

The path to becoming a consistently winning trader is not what it first appears. It may seem obvious that all that is required is to purchase a trading system, and then sit back and watch the cash roll in. But sadly, this is not the case. There is no magic cure, but there is a cure. And it will have benefit you - not just in the game of trading, but in the game of life.

In this workshop David Paul and Tom Hougaard will introduce the importance of trading psychology and detail a daily ritual for you, which will build a winning mental approach to the life of trading. The process will have positive inputs to all areas of your life. Successful trading is not a question of skill. It is a question of character.

We will navigate the following issues with you:

  1. What are your trading objectives?
  2. System expectancy and advanced concepts of money management
  3. You need to think in probabilities. We know how to make you do it
  4. Sidestepping the 4 trading fears by building presence in life and in trading
  5. Exercises to accelerate your performance

The objective from the short seminar is to introduce and practice a set of simple techniques which will integrate and easily build trading discipline if practiced each trading day.

Don't Compare Yourself to Others

This is a personal journey, and as most traders lie to themselves and others about their trading. There is no point in comparing yourself to others, because this is your journey, and you most likely have a different set of circumstances, including account size, trading time frame etc etc.

Interview Extract from Tom Hougaard

In an interview with Traders Magazine Tom Hougaard told the interviewer some startling insights to the business he worked in:

“I hate the organizers of some of the workshops out there, because they create an image of trading, which is far detached from reality, and people will believe it, because people attracted to trading are generally greedy. Greed is in my opinion a stronger emotional force than fear. It causes traders to jump in too early, jump the gun, buy too much and hold on too long.

Fear is a little different. Our fears cause us to procrastinate and stop doing what we should do, and while both sets of emotions have similar outcomes, there are subtle differences, and as a trader you need to know which has the upper hand.

The emotion of fear freezes the physical body, and the residual of pain is left in the body as a memory. We needed fear for survival in the days gone by. Now we don’t run the risk of bumping into a T-Rex on our way to work, as our ancestors did. Our fear is different and is more of a psychological than physiological, but it is still real in our perceptional universe. And it needs to be dealt with before the trader can make trading a source of living. I am not looking for the “big win”. I am looking for persistence.

The trick in trading is not making the money. It is keeping it. I don’t think I have ever seen anyone trading on a demo account not make a fortune. What does that tell you? It tells you that this game is 99% mental, but all of us go around looking for the next big thing in the area of technical analysis, when all we really have to do to find the Holy Grail is look in the mirror.

So when you hear about or meet the really good traders, you naturally want to ask them what software they are using, what settings they use, and what news service they subscribe to. What you really should be asking is “how are you thinking?”

Agenda for the Workshop

In this workshop we will show you how to go about building the mental strength to just go about playing the game of trading. It’s an ongoing exercise which we both work at everyday. If we don't, then the outcome is predictable. If we don’t mentally prepare ourselves, we might as well just hand over our money to the market, because we will have lost before we even get started.

Of course we are NOT talking about sitting cross-legged in an esoteric manner, starring at a burning candle with incense sticks burning around us, while chanting incomprehensible mantras. And of course we are not pumped up Tony Robbins style either, shouting at the top of the voice some absurd statement.

We are talking about a mental framework, a step-by-step process. It will teach you how to focus, very much in the same manner as top athletes like Tiger Woods, Serena Williams and Earnie Els are are taught how to focus.

The workshop focuses on practical techniques for getting in the state you need to be to trade optimally, but it is not a workshop where we ask you to do things you may not like to do. We understand that you wish to be taught the motions we go through, and we will show you what we do. And think of it like this: if it works for Tiger Woods, then it might just work for you too. David Paul has trained Earnie Els trading Forex. Earnie is a natural, due to his focus. Rumours has it he has two coaches for his mental preparation alone!!!!!!!
